Justin Johnson

INTRODUCTION

Justin regularly appears in the Magistrates', Youth, and Crown courts. He is a Grade 1 prosecutor and is instructed as defence counsel on a wide range of matters involving fraud, POCA, protest, and domestic abuse. Justin is regularly instructed in cases involving vulnerable clients and has extensive experience in youth-related work.

Justin Johnson joined 9BR Chambers in April 2023, following the successful completion of his pupillage. During his supervision with Max Hardy, Corinne Bramwell, Richard Paton-Philip and Jollyon Robertson, Justin gained experience in the full spectrum of criminal law, including serious financial, violent, and sexual crime.

BACKGROUND AND EXPERTISE

Before joining Chambers, Justin worked on policy at the Ministry of Justice, where he worked on several policy areas. Justin also worked as an advocate at the charity Just for Kids Law, where he was part of a multidisciplinary team assisting children and young people to navigate issues bridging traditional practice areas. Justin has also represented Appellants before First-tier Tribunal concerning educational provision and benefits.

Justin is developing a specialist youth dimension to his practice while dealing with increasingly serious matters in the youth court, and he is regularly instructed in matters involving domestic abuse. In addition to this, Justin is keen to build upon the experience gained during pupillage and cultivate expertise in financial crime and confiscation, and serious violence. Justin has also acted in the early stages of proceedings relating to historic sexual abuse, conspiracy to supply, and money laundering.

During his pupillage, Justin covered a range of hearings for members of chambers. He has acted in the early stages of extradition proceedings in relation to Part 1 and Part 2 territories and is keen to grow his knowledge in this area.

As a pupil, Justin assisted with the prosecution of a number of complex frauds, involving mortgage frauds and betting frauds.
